A place for horse lovers
The Tsurui Dosanko Ranch offers horse trekking tours with Dosanko, a breed of horse indigenous to Hokkaido. Since its establishment in 1995, the ranch has become a popular spot for horse lovers looking to meet Dosanko horses at any time of the year.
What are Dosanko horses?
The Dosanko’s official name in Japanese is “Hokkaido Washuba”. It is one of the rare species of horse that is native to Japan. Dosanko horses were important companions during Hokkaido’s pioneering age, being commonly used for carrying loads and doing farm work. They have relatively small but stocky bodies and a gentle temperament, making them popular steeds for children or horse-riding beginners.
The Dosanko horses at Tsurui Dosanko Ranch are free to roam the fields all day long and all year round, even during the hot summers and cold winters. The popular horse trekking tours are also available all year, so you can ride in and around the Kushiro Marsh to see its natural scenery throughout the seasons.
Enjoy a long stay at the ranch
The Center House in the ranch includes a café and guest rooms for lodging, so visitors can relax after a day of riding or even stay for several nights. In winter, you can spend a luxurious time watching the horses through a large window while enjoying the warmth of a wood-burning stove at the café.
